About Our Heated Solvent Testing Process

The heated solvent test applies a controlled solvent directly to the surface of a component package. Original equipment manufacturer markings are either laser-etched into the package or moulded during manufacture, so they are physically part of the component and unaffected by solvent contact.

Counterfeit markings are almost always applied on top of the package using ink-jet printing, pad printing or paint, frequently over a resurfacing layer known as blacktopping. Solvent contact removes these immediately, often revealing the original part number underneath and confirming the component has been re-marked.

It is a fast, low-cost screening method and sits early in a layered counterfeit component testing process, typically alongside external visual inspection and XRF analysis before more involved methods are considered.

What is the heated solvent test?

A controlled solvent is applied to the surface of a component package. Original laser-etched or moulded markings are unaffected, while applied ink or paint markings are removed, exposing re-marked parts.

Is the heated solvent test destructive?

It is applied to a small representative sample rather than the whole batch. The tested parts may show surface marking changes, so they are treated as sacrificial, while the remainder stays intact.

What is blacktopping?

Blacktopping is a resurfacing technique where a coating is applied over the original package surface to hide existing markings before new ones are printed. Solvent contact reveals it immediately.

Why do counterfeiters re-mark components?

To present old, obsolete, lower-grade or reclaimed parts as current, higher-specification stock. Re-marking is among the most common counterfeit techniques in the open market.
