About Our Heated Solvent Testing Process

The heated solvent test applies a controlled solvent directly to the surface of a component package. Original equipment manufacturer markings are either laser-etched into the package or moulded during manufacture, so they are physically part of the component and unaffected by solvent contact.

Counterfeit markings are almost always applied on top of the package using ink-jet printing, pad printing or paint, frequently over a resurfacing layer known as blacktopping. Solvent contact removes these immediately, often revealing the original part number underneath and confirming the component has been re-marked.

It is a fast, low-cost screening method and sits early in a layered counterfeit component testing process, typically alongside external visual inspection and XRF analysis before more involved methods are considered.
