Ionic Contamination Testing

Ionic Contamination Testing for Reprocessed Component Detection

Systemation Euro provides ionic contamination testing for OEMs, distributors and contract electronics manufacturers who need to identify components that have previously been through a soldering or cleaning process. Elevated ionic residue is a strong indicator of reclaimed stock.

Our Ionic Contamination Testing Capabilities

Ionic contamination testing measures conductive residue on component surfaces, revealing prior processing that visual inspection cannot detect.

Residue Measurement

Surface ionic residue measured and compared against expected levels for new stock.

Reclaim Detection

Elevated readings indicate components previously soldered into an assembly and recovered.

Flux Residue Identification

Detects flux residues left by an earlier soldering operation.

Cleaning Process Evidence

Reveals aggressive cleaning used to disguise a component’s history.

Corrosion Risk Assessment

Ionic residue left in place can drive long-term corrosion and field failure.

Documented Readings

Measurements recorded per sample and supplied as part of your inspection evidence.

About Our Ionic Contamination Testing Process

Ionic contamination testing measures the conductive ionic residue present on a component’s surface. Samples are washed in a controlled solution and the change in conductivity is measured, giving a quantified reading of how much ionic material was present.

New components supplied through authorised channels carry very low ionic residue. Components that have been soldered into an assembly, recovered and re-sold typically carry flux residues and cleaning-agent traces that push readings well above expected levels, even after the part has been cleaned to look new.

Beyond counterfeit screening, ionic residue matters in its own right: left in place on a finished assembly it can drive electrochemical migration and long-term corrosion. Testing forms part of a layered counterfeit component testing process and pairs naturally with solderability testing, which is affected by the same contamination.

It measures the conductive ionic residue on a component’s surface. Samples are washed in a controlled solution and the resulting change in conductivity gives a quantified reading of contamination.

Most commonly that a component has previously been soldered into an assembly and recovered, or has been through an aggressive cleaning process to disguise its history.

The test itself does not damage the component, though parts are handled in a wash solution. Testing is normally carried out on a representative sample from the batch.

Ionic residue left on a finished assembly can drive electrochemical migration and corrosion over time, causing field failures long after production.

Yes. Measurements are recorded per sample and supplied as a written report suitable for your incoming inspection and audit records.
