What is obsolescence management?
Obsolescence management is the practice of anticipating and managing the risk of components becoming unavailable during a product lifecycle. IEC 62402 provides the international framework, and in defence contexts it sits alongside DMSMS planning.
What happens when a component becomes obsolete?
It is no longer available through authorised channels. Options narrow to using existing stock, recovering parts from other assemblies, sourcing from brokers, or redesigning the board, which usually triggers requalification.
Can obsolete components be recovered and re-used?
Often yes. Devices recovered from surplus or scrap boards can be removed, refinished, tested and returned to service. Because the boards are your own, there is no counterfeit exposure.
Why is counterfeit risk higher for obsolete parts?
Obsolete devices are largely unavailable through authorised distribution, so buyers turn to brokers and the open market. That is precisely where counterfeit prevalence is highest, which makes independent testing essential.
Can you restore components that have degraded in storage?
Yes. Oxidised or contaminated terminations can be re-tinned, and BGA packages reballed, restoring solderability on parts that would otherwise be unusable.
Which sectors does this affect most?
Aerospace, defence, rail, medical and industrial, where equipment remains in service for decades and requalifying a redesign is costly or heavily regulated.
