The Obsolescence Problem in Long-Life Equipment

The mismatch is structural. A rolling stock fleet, an aircraft platform or an infusion pump may be supported for thirty years or more. A semiconductor product line might run for five. Every long-life programme therefore faces a point where a component it depends on is no longer manufactured.

The consequences are rarely just procurement problems. An obsolete part can halt a production line, delay a maintenance schedule, or force a board redesign that then requires full requalification. In regulated sectors such as medical and aerospace, requalification is frequently the largest cost in the chain, which is why extending the life of an existing design is usually preferable to redesigning around a new part.

Obsolescence management as a discipline is covered by IEC 62402, the international standard for establishing an obsolescence management framework across a product lifecycle. In defence contexts it sits alongside DMSMS, Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages, and the SD-22 guidance. These frameworks set out how to plan for obsolescence. What they do not do is supply the parts.

That is the practical gap we work in. Where devices can be recovered from existing boards, our component recovery service returns them to service.
